A WONDERful Christmas

This Christmas, we’re slowing down to rediscover the wonder at the heart of the story. Throughout Advent and the Christmas Season, we’ll explore the moments that filled the first Christmas with awe — wonder in the waiting, wonder in God’s faithfulness, and wonder in the arrival of Jesus, who brings hope, peace, joy, and love to the world.

Questions

  1. Where do you see the temptation for power, control, or “being in charge” show up in your own life?  How does Herod’s story challenge or warn you?   

2. The Magi and Joseph were attentive to God’s leading—especially through dreams.  How open are you to God speaking in unexpected ways? Have you ever experienced God’s guidance like that?   

3. Herod’s life was marked by power, paranoia, discontentment, and a constant need for more.  What practices help you cultivate contentment instead of striving for “more”?   

4. Reread Mark 10 and Philippians 2, Jesus models a life of service, sacrifice, and humility.  What is one practical way you can imitate Jesus’ servant-hearted posture this Advent season?   

5. Reflect on the contrast between Herod the King and Jesus the Servant King.  What does this contrast reveal about the kind of kingdom Jesus invites us into—and how does that redefine “greatness”?

    1. Simeon experienced both deep awe and deep relief when he saw Jesus. Can you share a time in your life when anticipation, tension, or waiting gave way to relief or peace? What did that moment teach you about God?
    2. Positioning before God
    3. Simeon is described as righteous, devout, Spirit-filled, and expectant. Which of these resonates most with you right now—and which feels most challenging? What might it look like to grow in that area this season?
    4. Seeing salvation
    5. Simeon declares that his eyes have seen God’s salvation in Jesus. What does “salvation” mean to you personally—not just as a belief, but as a lived reality? Where do you most need Jesus’ light right now?
    6. Wonder and cost
    7. Simeon speaks both blessing and pain over Mary’s future. How do you respond to the idea that following Jesus includes both wonder and suffering? How has this been true in your own journey of faith?
    8. Living expectantly
    9. Simeon waited faithfully for God to fulfill His promise. As we approach Christmas, what are you waiting or hoping for from God? How can our group help one another live more expectantly and faithfully in the meantime?
