He Promises

This series unpacks some of the incredible promises made by Jesus — promises of love, peace, rest, guidance, and presence. Through Scripture, we’ll discover how God’s unchanging character gives us confidence to trust Him and live with hope.

Join us as we explore what these promises meant for the first hearers, what they mean for us today, and how they call us to seek Him and His Kingdom first.

Study Questions

Scripture Reading

Luke 15:1-7

Questions

  1. Broken Promises vs. God’s Promises: How have you experienced the disappointment of broken promises—whether from people or products—and how does that contrast with the unbreakable promises of God in Numbers 23:19?
  2. Personal Love: In what ways does the parable of the lost sheep (Luke 15:1–7) help you understand that Jesus’ love is personal and not just general? When have you felt personally pursued by God’s love?
  3. Proven Love: John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” How does knowing that Jesus proved His love by dying for us change how we respond to Him?
  4. Powerful Love: The disciple John went from being a “son of thunder” to “the one whom Jesus loved.” What does his transformation teach us about how God’s powerful love can change our own hearts and relationships?
  5. Love as a Present Reality: Romans 5:8 says that God demonstrated His love for us “while we were still sinners.” How can we live out the truth that God’s love is present and available right now, even in our mess?
  6. Love That Changes Others: The story of Maximilian Kolbe shows love’s power to transform even in suffering. Where might God be inviting you to let His love flow through you to someone difficult to love?

Scripture Reading

Matthew 6

Questions

  1. Where do you see the temptation for power, control, or “being in charge” show up in your own life?  How does Herod’s story challenge or warn you?
  2. The Magi and Joseph were attentive to God’s leading—especially through dreams.  How open are you to God speaking in unexpected ways? Have you ever experienced God’s guidance like that?
  3. Herod’s life was marked by power, paranoia, discontentment, and a constant need for more.  What practices help you cultivate contentment instead of striving for “more”?
  4. Reread Mark 10 and Philippians 2, Jesus models a life of service, sacrifice, and humility.  What is one practical way you can imitate Jesus’ servant-hearted posture this Advent season?
  5. Reflect on the contrast between Herod the King and Jesus the Servant King.  What does this contrast reveal about the kind of kingdom Jesus invites us into—and how does that redefine “greatness”?

Scripture Reading

Matthew 11:18-30

Questions

  1. What does it look like for you to sabbath (Stop>Rest>Delight>Cultivate) in the midst of your busy? What helps you make that intentional move toward Jesus?

  2. Jesus invites us to take His yoke upon us — a picture of shared work and partnership. In what areas of your life do you find it hardest to trust that His way is lighter or better than your own?

  3. Jesus describes Himself as gentle and humble in heart. What might it look like to learn from Him a different way of handling busyness and rest?

  4. We often equate rest with stopping or escaping. How is the rest Jesus offers different from simply taking a break? Where have you experienced that deeper soul-satisfying rest?

  5. Jesus promises an exchange — our burdens for His rest. What might you sense Him inviting you to lay down right now, and what do you think He wants to give you in return?

Scripture Reading

Matthew 28:16-20

Questions

  1. When Jesus gave his Great Commission (Matthew 28:16–20), some worshipped and some doubted. Why do you think doubt and faith can coexist in our walk with Jesus? How can we “step toward Jesus” even when we doubt? Do you have a story about this from your own life you'd be willing to share?
  2. Jesus’ “Position Description” for disciples includes making disciples, baptising, and teaching obedience.– Which of these feels most natural or most challenging for you? Why?
  3. The Holy Spirit is described as our “internal GPS” leading us into the truth of Jesus.– How have you experienced the Holy Spirit guiding, teaching, or reminding you in your own life?– What helps you recognise His leading in your everyday life?
  4. Michael Green said the Western church has become too dependent on words and not enough on the Holy Spirit’s power.– Do you agree? What might it look like for us to rely more fully on the Spirit’s power in everyday life?
  5. Jesus promises to be with us always—through doubt, faith, and on mission.– What does this promise mean for you personally right now?– How can your group help one another live with greater awareness of His presence this week?
